BCA Facilitated Cash Exchange in "National Care for Coins Movement" to Support BI’s Coin Usage Campaign

Jakarta, June 25, 2016 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), in collaboration with several other banks, are synergizing its efforts with Bank Indonesia (BI) to support the use of coins by providing facilities for people to exchange their small change. BCA offers multiple options, from coin-to-note exchange, and conversions of coins or notes to electronic money.

“National Care for Coins Movement" was held on June 25, 2016 in Jakarta, and attended by BCA Head of Consumer Card Senior General Manager Santoso, Bank Indonesia Deputy Governor Ronald Waas, Central Jakarta Mayor Mangara Pardede, and other banking industry leaders.

“As an official transaction medium in Indonesia, the circulation of coins is declining. BCA supports Bank Indonesia's effort to restore the presence of coins through cash exchange services today. Together, we would like to shape a society that conducts smart Rupiah transactions by using coins as payment, instead of keeping or storing them," Santoso explained.

In addition to coin-to-note conversions, Santoso also stated that conversions to electronic money are also available, further expanding the cashless culture campaign in our society. The event hopes to encourage people to exchange any coin they have.

The event was part of National Care for Coins Movement, launched and celebrated annually by Bank Indonesia since 2010. Within the last decade, according to Bank Indonesia, BI has issued Rp 6 trillion in coins, with only Rp 900 billion came back from circulation, or just 16% with a declining trend. This is due to public habits of treating coins not as a transactional medium. On the other hand, the cost to produce coins is also quite high.

"A society can wisely conduct transaction by keeping coins in circulation. The movement is hoped to take place periodically and in a well spread pattern to encourage users of coins spread all over Indonesia," Santoso continued.

At the occasion, BCA and other banks are providing free coin exchange facilities. The annual event is one of BCA's efforts to anticipate increased need for cash, especially small changes, during Eid holiday period. Customers may exchange their money up to a maximum of Rp 3,700,000, consisting of 100 Rp 20,000 notes, 100 Rp 10,000 notes, 100 Rp 5,000 notes, and 100 Rp 2,000 notes. To minimize monopoly, customers are required to provide an identity card when exchanging money. BCA’s cash car exchange facilities by BCA will be on patrol between June 13 - 26, 2016, from 08.30 to 13.00 Western Indonesia Time.
