Jakarta, 29 August 2025 – For many micro, small, and medium enterprise (MSME) players in Indonesia, halal certification is an essential asset. However, many still operate without it. This view is echoed by Welly Kent Sent (31), an MSME entrepreneur from Pontianak, West Kalimantan.
Welly is the owner of Kaloci PTK, an MSME in the food sector. As the name suggests, Kaloci PTK sells kaloci, a traditional Pontianak delicacy resembling mochi from glutinous rice flour. According to Welly, many MSME owners are still unfamiliar with the procedures and requirements for obtaining halal certification. In fact, under current regulation, all MSMEs are required to process this document no later than October 2026.
Welly expressed his gratitude upon discovering PT Bank Central Asia Tbk’s (BCA) halal certification training program in 2024. At that time, BCA assisted Kaloci PTK and other MSMEs in obtaining halal certification through its training initiative. Kaloci PTK was one of 2,000 MSMEs that received halal certification through the Bakti BCA program throughout 2024.
Contrary to his initial expectations, he said the certification process facilitated by BCA was quick and free of charge. “From there, the impact we felt after our product received halal certification was a boost in confidence,” Welly said during an interview in Batam, Riau Islands, recently.
Welly analogized MSMEs without halal certification as cars without windshield wipers. While they can still operate in the market, having a “wiper” of halal certification allows Kaloci PTK’s products to be marketed without fear of facing “rain and storms”.
“Halal certification helps us reach wider markets in Indonesia, particularly Muslim consumers. It allows our products to be enjoyed with comfort and peace of mind,” he added.
Thanks to halal certification, Welly reported that Kaloci PTK’s revenue grew significantly. By the end of 2024, sales had increased by 11 percent year-on-year. He also mentioned that he no longer needs to repeatedly convince prospective buyers about the halal status of his products.
“Halal certification makes it easier for us to sell outside of Pontianak. BCA’s halal certification training program has greatly supported the sustainability of our family business,” Welly added.
The benefits of BCA’s halal certification program were also experienced by Anita Vemilia (41), the owner of Tibumi, a cold-pressed juice business in Padang, West Sumatra. When she first started in mid-2023, Anita’s monthly revenue was only around Rp1 million. However, after joining BCA’s halal certification program in December 2023, her income grew tenfold.
According to Anita, BCA not only helped her obtain halal certification but also supported her in developing business ideas and improving product packaging. Thanks to the new knowledge she gained, Tibumi cold-pressed juice, which was initially marketed only by word of mouth, is now available at local shops and minimarkets.
“Now that the packaging looks attractive, Tibumi products are everywhere. Alhamdulillah, our monthly revenue has exceeded IDR 10 million,” Anita said.
Anita and Welly are just two of thousands of MSMEs entrepreneurs who have benefitted from BCA’s ongoing halal certification training program, since 2023. By the end of 2024, BCA had facilitated the issuance of 3.000 halal certificates across regions. In 2025, the program continues with a target of facilitating another 2.000 certifications for MSMEs.
The latest halal certification training was held by BCA in early August in Batam City, Riau Islands. Around 300 MSMEs from the region participated in the event, obtained guidance to meet halal standards, free halal certification support, and training to improve product quality and market reach to strengthen their businesses.
