Bandung, 29 October 2019 –PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) continues to demonstrate its commitment and consistency to preserving Indonesian arts through various programs and activities. Under the Bakti BCA cultural program, BCA for Indonesian Wayang, BCA organized the Wayang for Student. This time, Wayang for Student 2019 features “Jaya Perbangsa” and Wayang Show that involves 140 students and is performed before 560 students and teachers from 7 schools in Bandung.
Wayang for Student 2019 in Bandung was opened by Executive Vice President CSR BCA Inge Setiawati, and High School Supervisor of West Java Provincial Education Office Heri Susanto Boaz. Also attending the opening ceremony was Head of Education Office of West Bandung Regency Imam Santoso, Puppeteer Apep A. S Hudaya, Headmasters and more than 700 students from 7 schools in Bandung on Tuesday (29/10).
These students were selected for their immense talent and interest in dance art, play, and music. They practiced for the Wayang for Student show at their respective schools. Each school performed a different repertoire, including Rebutan Konta, Jabang Tutuka, Brajamusti Gugat,and Gatotkaca Sabda Guru. The schools participated in the program were SMA Negeri 1, SMA Negeri 7, SMA BPI 2, SMK Pelita, SMP AL FALLAH, SMP Negeri 1 Lembang, and SMP Negeri 1 Cisarua.
Inge said that Wayang for Studentwas held to introduce wayang from an early age to Indonesian children. UNESCO recognized wayang as Indonesian heritage since 2003. “Wayang is part of Indonesian indigenous culture that must be introduced to the millennial generation. All underlying moral values suggested in wayang shows are still relevant today. Therefore, BCA continues to strive through a variety of educational and fun programs to further introduce wayang to students in various parts of Indonesia, including Bandung,” explained Inge.
According to the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, of the eight cultural elements, UNESCO had designated wayang as a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity since 2003. “Wayang has the potential to promote pop culture in Indonesia. Through persuasive and interactive educational activities, wayang can lift the spirit of nationalism and diversity of our younger generation,” explained Inge.
The program features a number of workshops – Assembling Wayang and Kaparigelan Dalang (Puppeteer Skills), and wayang exhibition. Furthermore, students from SMA BPI 2 and SMP N 1 Cisarua will perform a dramatic fragment called “Rebutan Konta”, while students of SMA Negeri 1 and SMP Al Fallah will perform “Jabang Tutuka”, SMA Negeri 7 with “Brajamusti Gugat”, and students of SMK Pelita and SMP N 1 Lembang with a fragment titled “Gatotkaca Sabda Guru”.
Inge added that Wayang for Student is a Bakti BCA’s CSR program that aims to preserve and promote Indonesian culture. “As the technology advances, it has become a juggernaut in modern era, playing a massive influence on the majority of Indonesian youth. However, we cannot forget our traditions and culture such as wayang. This has then provided the background for us to consistently organize Wayang for Students program since 2014,” explained Inge.
Wayang for Student is intended for introducing wayang to Indonesian youth that, in turn, is expected to improve intelligence – whether intuition, emotions, feelings, reason, and instincts. Risa Amanda, a student from SMP Al Fallah, said, “We are happy to be able to attend the performance. Thanks to BCA for its continuous effort to introduce wayang to young people in a fun way.”
