Jakarta, 1 July 2026 - In learning and teaching activities, teachers have always been the spark that brought about the passion to learn in students, so they would want to acquire knowledge. In Bengkulu, teachers who are Science Heroes try to spark their students by innovating in bringing the will to learn out in students learning science.
Linda Komalasari, a first-grade teacher at SDN 61 in Bengkulu City, is one of the teachers who innovates in carrying out her duties. Linda innovates because she understands the unspoken challenges of teaching: students' boredom and weariness when they have to sit, listen to explanations, and memorize information. "I often see students quickly get bored when they are simply asked to copy or memorize. They sit quietly, but their eyes are blank and uninspired," Linda said.
For her, such learning methods are insufficient. She believes that first-grade elementary school students should not only learn to read, write, and count in the classroom. They need to be encouraged to see the world more broadly.
Linda then implemented a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)-based approach to teaching. This approach was chosen to foster students’ curiosity, spark questions, and encourage them to find their own answers. Linda's method is far from complex; she takes her students outside the classroom.
"We walked around the schoolyard, picked papaya, corn, mango, cassava, and betel leaves. They carried the leaves in their hands, then observed, asked questions, and tried to figure out why the leaves had different shapes," she said.
Since implementing the out-of-class learning method, Linda feels her students' development has accelerated. Linda's approach has proven to foster students' curiosity. Linda offered several tips for teachers who want to emulate her teaching style. She abbreviated these suggestions as ABCDE:
- Amati (Observe): Invite students to observe objects to foster curiosity.
- Bertanya (Ask): Encourage students to generate questions based on their observations.
- Cari (Search): Guide students to formulate findings and draw conclusions.
- Diskusi (Discuss): Encourage students to work in groups to discuss their findings.
- Evaluasi (Evaluate): Encourage students to deepen their knowledge after participating in out-of-class activities and to confidently explain their findings in front of the class.
Linda is not the only teacher using a STEM-based approach to teaching. She, along with other teachers in the Science Heroes community, frequently strives to provide more enjoyable science learning methods.
The Science Heroes community in Bengkulu was formed when PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), under the Bakti BCA umbrella, began its presence there through the Bakti BCA School program. This program aims to support improving the quality of primary and secondary education in the target areas. One way Bakti BCA Schools improve education quality is by optimizing the competency of educators at the program locations.
Optimizing the competency of educators at Bakti BCA Schools has so far gone according to plan. Evidence of this is evident in the stories of Linda and her friends in Bengkulu. Currently, there are four Bakti BCA Schools in Bengkulu: SDN 61, SDN 73, SDN 40, and SDN 36 Bengkulu.
By 2025, there will be a total of 32 Bakti BCA Schools in Lampung, Banten, Gunung Kidul, Banyuwangi, Bengkulu City, East Kalimantan, East Nusa Tenggara, and Southwest Papua. However, 20 schools from Lampung, Banten, Gunung Kidul, and Banyuwangi have completed the program.
"BCA Bakti Schools is a program to develop and empower schools holistically. Educational institutions that become BCA Bakti Schools are directed to excel in character, science, and technology. This program is our effort to help create superior and high-quality schools in various regions to meet the challenges of the future," said Hera F. Haryn, EVP of Corporate Communication and Social Responsibility at BCA.
BCA hopes that the good practices and improvements in the quality of teaching and learning at BCA Bakti Schools will continue and have a positive impact on the surrounding educational community. According to Hera, BCA Bakti Schools are intended to provide mentoring and ensure that every step has a positive impact on students, the school community, and the community.
"Amidst global challenges such as technological developments and the impact of climate change, developing a scientific character will be crucial. Children accustomed to thinking scientifically will be more resilient, adaptive, and empowered to face the future. BCA hopes this mentoring will help produce a generation of young people who dare to dream, are critical thinkers, and become agents of change," said Hera.
In Bengkulu, the presence of the BCA Bakti School has not only enabled teachers like Linda to implement more enjoyable inquiry methods for students. This program also provides the school with the opportunity to hold a Gelar Karya, an exhibition that empowers BCA Bakti School stakeholders not only to learn but also to leave with inspiration.
