Malang, 13 November 2025 – PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting environmental resilience and community economic sustainability through Tree Planting and Spring Restoration Program in Sekar Sidodadi Village, Ngantang District, Malang Regency, East Java. This initiative is a part of the Bakti Lingkungan pillar under the Bakti BCA program, took place from Saturday (8/11) to Monday (10/11). This program focuses on restoring upstream ecosystem functions as a foundation for economic sustainability in downstream areas and rejuvenating catchment areas.
A total of 21,000 trees were planted within the community-managed forestry area. This includes 12,000 bamboo trees and 9,000 multi-purpose tree species (MPTS) such as avocado, durian, and other productive plants. Bamboo serves as the main element due to its natural ability to prevent erosion, reinforce soil structure, and improve water absorption for restoring the hydrological system in Ngantang. The conservation efforts are carried out through collaboration with local residents grouped under the Forest Farmer Group Association (GAPOKTANHUT), Jejakin, and the Yayasan Bambu Lingkungan Lestari (YBLL).
VP Corporate Social Responsibility BCA Titi Yusnarti attended the activity on-site, along with several implementing partners and community representatives, including Jejakin Chief Impact and Sustainability Fainta Susilo Negoro, YBLL East Java Coordinator Sahlan Junaedy, and GAPOKTANHUT Chairman Joko Purnomo. This cross-sector collaboration forms a critical foundation to ensure the restoration is measurable, monitored, and beneficial for the long term.
EVP Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility BCA Hera F. Haryn stated, “Restoring upstream ecosystems is not only an environmental issue, it directly affects quality of life and the economic sustainability of downstream communities. BCA believes that stable water availability supports both environmental resilience and local economic activity, from agricultural productivity to the growth of sustainable nature-based tourism. Through the program in Ngantang, we ensure that our interventions go beyond tree planting, extending to spring restoration, capacity building, monitoring, and community-driven management.”
Ngantang District serves as a vital water source supporting agriculture, livestock, and household needs in surrounding areas. However, decreased vegetation in recent years has reduced water discharge and quality, leading to:
- Higher agricultural production costs due to increased irrigation needs
- Greater risk of crop failure and declining farmer income
- Reliance on more expensive alternative water sources
- Accelerated land degradation due to ecological stress
Protecting upstream water sources means safeguarding livelihoods and strengthening local economic resilience. This upstream ecosystem restoration becomes a strategic intervention that directly impacts agricultural sustainability, community well-being, and long-term environmental preservation.
The spring restoration activities in Ngantang began with clearing and rehabilitating the spring area, repairing water retention structures (rorak), and strengthening natural reservoirs to increase water availability throughout the year. Eco-friendly filters made of stones, gravel, sand, and activated carbon were also installed to maintain water quality flowing to farms and nearby settlements. All activities involve active participation from GAPOKTANHUT and local communities, ensuring they become not only beneficiaries but also long-term caretakers and managers of the conservation area.
This Tree Planting and Spring Restoration Program is a continuation of the collaboration between BCA and Jejakin that began in 2023. The initiative aims to preserve water sources while providing conservation education to local communities. It also includes digital monitoring of tree growth through Jejakin’s technology. Beyond Malang, BCA will continue the Spring Restoration Program in Temurejo Village, Banyuwangi Regency.
BCA’s commitment to environmental conservation is consistently implemented through various initiatives under the Bakti BCA, particularly the Bakti Lingkungan pillar. To date, BCA has planted over 190,000 trees across Indonesia since 2009. Most recently, BCA inaugurated the Turtle Education Center and released baby turtles (tukik) at Goa Cemara Beach, Bantul, Yogyakarta. Nearly 65,000 tukik have been released and over 1,000 nests relocated across three conservation sites.
