Supporting Sea Turtle Conservation, BCA Inaugurates Conservation Facility at Goa Cemara Beach

Yogyakarta, August 3, 2025 – PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) reaffirmed its commitment to environmental conservation by hosting the “Inauguration of the Education Center and Release of Sea Turtle Hatchlings” event at Goa Cemara Beach, Bantul Regency, Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY), on Friday (August 1). This support is part of the BCA Bakti initiative to maintain the sustainability of the coastal ecosystem, while strengthening the aspects of education and conservation-based tourism in the Goa Cemara Beach area.

The inauguration of the Education House and release of sea turtle hatchlings at Goa Cemara Beach was attended by a number of important figures, including Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Bendara from the Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace, Head of the DIY Marine and Fisheries Service R. Hery Sulistio Hermawan, S.Pi., M.T., Head of the Bantul Regency Tourism Office Saryadi, S.IP., M.Si., BCA Director Antonius Widodo, and BCA EVP of Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility Hera F. Haryn.

BCA Director Antonius Widodo said, “Sea turtle conservation is not just about protecting a single species, but also preserving the entire marine ecosystem. The inauguration of the sea turtle conservation facility at Goa Cemara Beach is part of BCA's commitment to preserving Indonesia's marine environment. We hope this facility will inspire the younger generation to care about and play an active role in protecting the environment.”

Goa Cemara Beach is one of the most important locations for sea turtles on the southern coast of Yogyakarta. The soft black sand, stable temperature, and long coastline make this area an ideal habitat for sea turtles. Since 2010, the Mino Raharjo Sea Turtle Conservation Group, in collaboration with the DIY Marine and Fisheries Department and the DIY Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), has implemented various conservation efforts, including beach patrols, egg rescue, semi-natural hatching, community education, and the release of hatchlings.

As a form of support for these efforts, the BCA Bakti program, through its Environmental Bakti pillar, has provided a number of supporting facilities such as the construction of a Sea Turtle Education Center, the provision of artificial incubation technology (Intan Box and Sari Box) that can increase egg hatching success rates to 90%, and the strengthening of conservation infrastructure, including the installation of paving blocks made from recycled BCA debit and credit cards. The conservation program at Goa Cemara Beach is also a cross-sector collaboration, particularly with the DIY Marine and Fisheries Service, local government, local communities, academics, and other stakeholders. This collaboration reaffirms the importance of synergy to ensure that conservation efforts are participatory and sustainable.

As part of a series of activities to inaugurate the conservation facility, Bakti BCA also held a sea turtle conservation education program for 100 students. The educational material was delivered through interactive storytelling and creative activities, such as coloring tote bags and making sea turtle piggy banks from used bottles. Not only did this activity introduce the concept of conservation in a fun way, but it also taught the importance of waste sorting to the students, who helped collect used plastic bottles for recycling. The inauguration event concluded with the release of hundreds of sea turtle hatchlings into the sea as a symbol of new hope for the sustainability of Indonesia's marine ecosystem.

Indonesia is home to six of the world's seven species of sea turtles. However, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), sea turtles are one of the species that need to be protected and preserved. This is due to habitat degradation, nesting site disturbance, and marine pollution. Community-based conservation efforts such as this are important to ensure the sustainability of species and the balance of coastal ecosystems.

Previously, Bakti BCA also supported sea turtle conservation in Banyuwangi together with the Banyuwangi Sea Turtle Foundation (BSTF), which gave birth to the “Intan Ruang” incubation room innovation with a capacity of 15,000 eggs. Additionally, Bakti BCA has supported conservation efforts at Kerobokan Beach, Bali, in collaboration with the Indonesian Mangrove Ranger Friends Association. Thanks to support in these three sea turtle conservation areas, throughout 2024, a total of 17,531 eggs were successfully relocated from 171 nests, and 15,003 hatchlings were released back into the ocean.
