Jakarta, December 19, 2016 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), through its program Bakti BCA, proved its committment and social responsibility once again in giving added value to society through a donation to World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Indonesia and Perhimpunan Dokter Spesialis Mata Indonesia Cataract Blindness Relief Division (SPBK – Perdami).
BCA President Director Jahja Setiaatmadja symbolically handed over the Rp 445 million donation to World Wildlife Fund Indonesia Acting CEO Benja Mambai and Rp500 million to SPBK Perdami Deputy Head Ari Djatikusumo. BCA Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) General Manager Inge Setiawati, CSR Solution Development Senior Advisor Sapto Rachmadi, WWF Indonesia Coral Triangle Program Director Wawan Ridwan, SPBK Perdami Chairperson Yeni Dwi Lestari, and SPBK Perdami Logistic Coordinator Umar Mardianto witnessed the event taking place at Menara BCA Jakarta on Monday (19/12). WWF will use the donation to finance turtle conservation program in Pangumbahan, Ujung Genteng, Sukabumi and Aroen Meubanja, Aceh. Meanwhile, SPBK Perdami plans to use the donation to buy two microscopes to use in free cataract surgeries in various locations in Indonesia.
Jahja explained BCA’s role and importance of conservation and environmental preservation. ”As a financial institution that continues to advocate for the conservation of nature and animals, BCA fully supports WWF’s turtle conservation program in an effort to balance nature’s ecosystem,” Jahja stated in response to the donation for turtle conservation program by WWF.
According to International Union for the Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), sea turtles are listed on the Red List of Threatened Species. Since 1984, WWF Indonesia has been involved in various sea turtles conservation projects, such as the rehabilitation of forest centre in support of turtle conservation program in Pangumbahan and Aroen Meubanja. “BCA fully supports WWF Indonesia movement to rehabilitate degraded forest areas, which serves as a conservation centre for turtles to lay their eggs. The location, which is close to the beach, acts as a tourist attraction, and we hope it will raise the awareness of local residents to develop tourism potential based on environmental conservation,” Jahja continued.
BCA’s donation to help SPBK Perdami purchase two microscopes was not the first. Jahja explained that BCA had previously donated one microscope worth Rp385 million in 2014, as well as 13 surgery equipments and two biometric equipments worth Rp450.45 million in 2015. “Cataract can attack anyone—from senior citizens to those in productive age. This motivated BCA to consistently support SPBK Perdami efforts to combat cataract in Indonesia,” he said.
Based on the data from RI Ministry of Health Research and Development Centre of Disease Eradication, cataract is one of the causes of blindness (0,78%). Cataract blindness is a degenerative illness generally experienced by seniors, but 16% of cataract blindness in Indonesia occurs in productive age bracket (40-54 years old). Therefore, the government, together with various entities, continues their effort to reduce the number of cataract in Indonesia.
“In addition to BCA’s focus on economy and social welfare, BCA also turns its attention to health issues, which contributes greatly to the guarantee of welfare. BCA donation is hoped to support Free Cataract Surgery program held by SPBK Perdami, and contribute to creating a cataract-free Indonesia by 2020,” Jahja concluded.
