BCA Organizes a Batik Painting Workshop

Yogyakarta, 17 March 2017 – Batik has been long recognized as one of Indonesia’s cultural heritages that needs to be protected and preserved. Committed to #BecomeBetter, on its 60th anniversary, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) had organized Batik Painting Workshops in four cities: Yogyakarta, Pati, Tulungagung, and Cirebon. The workshops have been part of the bank’s effort to improve batik makers’ competitiveness in Indonesia.

Attending to open the Batik Painting Workshop in Yogyakarta on Friday (17/03) was the Head of Business Development of BCA Yogyakarta Branch, Yonathan Kurniawan. The workshop had involved Mustar Sidiq, author of Panduan Teknik Batik Tulis (The Batik Hand-Painting Manuals), as a facilitator invited to teach batik painting techniques using natural colorings.

“Commemorating its 60th anniversary, BCA is committed to Become Better through its three pillars of Learn Better, Serve Better, and Give Better. The batik painting workshop is part of BCA’s commitment to Give Better to the people by improving the competitiveness of hand-dyed batik makers through utilization of natural coloring techniques, as the signature of Indonesian batik,” said Yonathan.

Since 2009, UNESCO has recognized batik as Indonesian intangible cultural heritage. As intangible cultural heritage, batik is considered to carry in it values and knowledge of history, the archipelagic distribution of Indonesian culture, and various motives that earn it the status of the fabric of Indonesian civilization. The rich sense, meaning, spirit, love, and harmony ‘engraved’ on hand-dyed batiks are considered original art forms. The values represented in batiks are something sacred that symbolize the roots of Indonesian culture.

“This workshop is expected to educate batik makers the intrinsic values buried deep within the hand-dyed batiks that they produce. I also wish that this workshop will help improve batik makers’ competitiveness in different regions, instill creativity in local business opportunities, and finally create job opportunities and improve the welfare of the locals. The Batik Painting Workshop has been held in consideration of the importance of improving the quality of hand-dyed batik in Indonesia as a national heritage that needs to be preserved,” added Yonathan.

Previously, BCA had also organized the 60 Tourist Villages Seminar in Yogyakarta, which was aimed at inspiring the local people to deliver excellent services and develop local tourist attractions in line with the geotourism principles of conservation of nature and community involvement. The Batik Painting Workshop and 60 Tourist Villages Seminar held, among others, in Yogyakarta were expected to help improve competitiveness of the local community and preserve the traditional cultures that make up the Indonesian icons of tourism. In addition to the batik workshop, BCA also donated 1,000 Panduan Teknik Batik Tulis books by Mustar Sidiq. The books are expected to stimulate batik makers’ creativity in painting batiks.

“The Batik Painting Workshop is part of the Solusi Sinergi program under Bakti BCA program. It has been the implementation of BCA’s commitment as the people’s leading financial institution to help improve the welfare of the community and achieve equitable distribution of economy in Indonesia. The workshop is expected to help ensure the survival of Indonesian batik production businesses, as well as preserving the authenticity of hand-dyed batiks,” said Yonathan concluding his remarks.
