Supporting the Maintenance of Natural Ecosystems, BCA Plants Mangroves in Ujung Kulon National Park

Ujung Kulon, 12 May 2018 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) once again demonstrated its commitment to participate in an effort to maintain the quality of the environment and natural ecosystems, and reducing environmental impacts. BCA’s commitment is implemented by working with WWF-Indonesia as an independent conservation organization through mangrove planting progam in Ujung Kulon National Park, Saturday (12/05).

The mangrove planting program was attended by Executive Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of BCA Inge Setiawati, Head of BCA Main Branch Office (KCU) Serang Lim Hauw Tjioe, Director of WWF-Indonesia Coral Triangle Program Wawan Ridwan, Project Leader of WWF Ujung Kulon Kurnia Oktavia Khairani, and the Head of Kepala of Ujung Kulon National Park Mamat Rahmat.

Indonesia has the largest mangrove ecosystem in the world with a high biodiversity, housing 3,489,140.68 hectares or equal to 23% of all mangroves on earth. Mangroves in Indonesia play an important role in controlling abrasion and maintaining the biological balance of coastal ecosystems, such as marine life, reptiles and birds. “Given the importance of the functions and roles of mangrove ecosystems, we encourage the efforts to conserve mangroves in order to help stabilize the ecological conditions and save the coastal habitats,” explained Inge.

Inge further added, it is important for us to take responsibility and work together to preserve mangrove forests and perform mangrove restoration in Ujung Kulon National Park. “We are calling for the surrounding communities to be proactively involved in germination, care and maintenance, restoration, and monitoring the growth of mangrove trees that are expected to not only have a positive impact on the environment but can also further create a sense of ownership and alternative livelihoods for the community,” said Inge.

BCA’s effort in mangrove restoration is a follow-up restoration that has previously been conducted in various locations including the Mangrove Ecotourism Pantai Indah Kapuk Jakarta, Blanakan Subang, Tanggamus Lampung, Muara Kali Opak Yogjakarta, Lamong Bay Surabaya, Lam Ujong Aceh Besar, Bengkayang West Kalimantan, Muara Gembong West Jawa, Wringin Putih Banyuwangi, and also Pejarakan Bali. With a total of 18 thousand mangrove seedlings that have been already planted, it is estimated that 36.84 tonnes/ha of CO2 will be absorbed within 10 years after the planting and will further improve various coastal habitats.

Furthermore, Kurnia Khairani Project Leader of WWF Ujung Kulon also explained that BCA’s support that aimed at rehabilitating degraded mangrove areas as a result of abrasion is expected to improve the isthmus connectivity between Ujung Kulon peninsula and Java Island. “If the connectivity is cut off, it will threaten the process of mobilization and development of a healthy population for Javan rhinos, and therefore, the rehabilitation of mangroves in this block becomes highly essential,” added Nia.
