Preventing Blindness Due to Cataracts, BCA and Perdami Holds Free Cataract Surgery

Ciamis. October 18, 2021 – Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness that may affect anyone. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) as part of the community has consistently held social services for cataract surgeries in the country. Collaborating with the Perdami’s (the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association) Central Cataract Blindness Eradication Unit (SPBK) this time, BCA holds Free Cataract Surgeries at Dadi Keluarga Ciamis Hospital.

This cataract surgery as a social service activity was attended by the Head of Tasikmalaya KCU (Main Branch Office) Hendri Darmin. Attending the event were the Head of Ciamis Regency Health Office Dr. H. Yoyo M.M.Kes, Dr Bangkit Damayanti of Perdami’s SPBK, and Director of Dadi Keluarga Ciamis Hospital dr. H. Muhamad Ikbal M.M and Central Perdami and West Java Perdami management. Cataract surgeries at Dadi Keluarga Ciamis Hospital are held for three consecutive days, from October 18 to 20, 2021.

Based on data revealed by the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB), from 2014 to 2016 by Perdami and National Institute of Health Research and Development of the Ministry of Health showed that the blindness rate in Indonesia reached 3% and the 81% are caused by cataract. Observing these numbers, of course, it has become the responsibility of many parties to collaborate to prevent blindness caused by cataracts.

“Cataract is not a disease that can be taken so lightly, it needs prevention and serious handling so that the number of people suffered blindness in Indonesia does not increase. BCA is committed to help our friends who suffer from cataracts but facing difficulty to pay for surgery. This social service is a form of BCA's concern for all patients with cataracts, especially those in Ciamis. This year, we are targeting 150 patients to undergo cataract surgery through this activity,” said Inge Setiawati as EVP CSR of BCA.

For additional information, BCA has cooperated with Perdami since 2001 and has successfully performed cataract surgeries on 5,763 patients. BCA also providescataract surgery equipment for SPBK PERDAMI, and several Perdami Branches to accelerate the eradication of cataract blindness. The operation involves six ophthalmologists accompanied by medical assistants to treat approximately 150 patients. On the other hand, in 2019, BCA donated 1 microscope and cataract instrument to Central Management SPBK Perdami, 1 microscope to Perdami DKI Jakarta Branch, and 1 phacoemulsification machine purchase to representative of Perdami Riau Branch.

Hendri Darmin expressed that this cataract surgery is a noble activity and gives hope to many Ciamis residents who are hindered by the cost of surgery. He also hopes that this activity could be held in many other regions in the country.

“As a banking institution that also gives attention to the health sector, BCA fully supports the cataract-free movement for people in Indonesia. We hope that this action brings positive value and invites all parties and the community to work together in helping others in need," Inge Setiawati concluded.

Bakti BCA Cataract Surgeries – Head of Tasikmalaya KCU Hendri Darmin directly observed the implementation of cataract surgery at Dadi Family Hospital, Ciamis on Monday (10/18). These operations also involved six ophthalmologists who were accompanied by medical assistants to treat around 150 patients.
