Jakarta, 29 July 2026 – Amidst the high number of cases, cataract surgery is one solution that sufferers need to undergo. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), under the Bakti BCA umbrella, collaborated with the Cataract Blindness Management Section of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK PERDAMI) to hold another Cataract Surgery Social Service (Baksos) in the Mentawai Islands, West Sumatra on July 19-20, 2026. This activity raised hopes for 107 beneficiary patients to return to their productive lives.
Pius Suraki, one of the patients who received free cataract surgery from Bakti BCA, shared his story of having suffered from cataracts for the past two years. He explained that the eye disease came on suddenly, disrupting his daily activities as a farmer.
"When I wanted to go into the fields, it looked like they had been cut, but it turned out they hadn't. Now I don't always go into the fields because my vision is sometimes clear and sometimes blurry," Pius recalled.
He revealed that he had also tried alternative treatments to restore his vision. Instead of improving, his vision worsened and became increasingly more blurry.
Therefore, the pain and hardship he experienced ultimately encouraged Pius to participate in this cataract surgery community service. He was driven by the high hope that this surgery would allow him to return to his fields and resume his normal activities.
"I am already starting to feel the effects of this surgery. Although it's only one eye that was operated on, I hope that the vision in that eye will return to normal and I can pursue my future life plans," said Pius.
BCA EVP of Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility, Hera F. Haryn, stated that BCA believes access to quality healthcare is crucial to creating a better life. She also expressed her appreciation for the collaboration with PERDAMI and all parties supporting this program.
"Through the Cataract Surgery Community Service Program, BCA aims to help people regain their sight so they can return to their activities, work, study, and create more optimally, ultimately improving their quality of life," said Hera.
According to data from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, there will be 600,000 to 650,000 cases of blindness due to cataracts by 2025. However, limited access to healthcare services, particularly in remote areas, remains a challenge for many communities. Therefore, BCA continues to expand its program reach so that more patients can receive free surgery.
The BCA Cataract Surgery Social Service Program is a long-term humanitarian movement that was initiated in 2001. By the end of December 2025, this program had successfully carried out 104 social service activities spread throughout Indonesia, and successfully restored the sight of a total of 9,956 patients.
To complement the free surgeries, since 2014, BCA has also periodically donated modern medical equipment to various PERDAMI SPBK branches. This assistance includes surgical instruments, microscopes, biometric devices, and medical instrument sets, which have been donated to the PERDAMI central network and branches.
Through the Bakti BCA corporate shared value (CSV) program umbrella, BCA is committed to continuing to present social programs that have a real impact on improving the quality of life of the Indonesian people, especially for groups with limited access and economic capabilities.
