Maluku, 27 May, 2025 - reaffirms its commitment to reducing the prevalence of cataract-related blindness in Indonesia by organizing another cataract surgery social initiative in North Maluku. BCA's first cataract surgery in 2025 was held at the Maba Regional General Hospital (RSUD), East Halmahera Regency, on Friday (23/5). In collaboration with the Cataract Blindness Management Section of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK PERDAMI), BCA reached out to more than 110 people in East Halmahera Regency and surrounding areas.
The opening ceremony was attended by Regent of East Halmahera Regency Ubaid Yakub, Head of East Halmahera Regency Health Office Abdullah Yakub, Director of Maba Regional Hospital Calice Jackline, SPBK Perdami Representative Retno Unggul Hapsari, and Head of BCA KCP Ternate Irham Farda.
BCA EVP Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility Hera F. Haryn said, "Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness, which is treatable. However, limited access to health services is still a challenge for some people in Indonesia. Under the umbrella of the Bakti Kesehatan program, BCA continues to provide real solutions through cataract surgery services in collaboration with SPBK PERDAMI. We hope that this activity will not only help restore the vision of the beneficiaries, but also open up opportunities for them to return to being active, productive, and contribute positively to their families and communities."
East Halmahera Regency is one of the regions in North Maluku known for its natural beauty, ranging from exotic beaches to various charming natural tourist destinations. Behind its natural potential, the majority of East Halmahera people depend on the tourism, fisheries, agriculture and mining sectors. These activities require excellent physical condition, including good vision health. High sun exposure in this region is one of the factors that cause cataracts and can accelerate the development of the condition. The implementation of cataract surgery is expected to have a real impact on the local community, helping cataract sufferers to return to their activities and increase their productivity in these various sectors.
BCA has held regular cataract surgery social services since 2001 in collaboration with SPBK Perdami. A total of 9,141 patients have benefited from cataract surgery from BCA. In 2024, free cataract surgeries from Bakti BCA were held in seven different locations, namely Namrole, Maluku; Pasangkayu, West Sulawesi; Central Bengkulu, Bengkulu; Banjar City, West Java; Central Maluku, Maluku; West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara; Cianjur, West Java. BCA also proactively provided support by providing cataract surgery equipment to assist SPBK PERDAMI in its cataract eradication efforts.
Director of RSUD Maba Calice Jackline said, "We would like to express our deepest appreciation to BCA for the noble initiative to provide free cataract surgery for the people of East Halmahera. This activity is very meaningful to the community, especially those who have limited access to eye health services. We hope that this program can continue and reach more areas in Indonesia, so that more people can be helped and their quality of life can improve."
For information, BCA through Bakti BCA continues to empower individuals to live healthier lives, by providing quality access to underprivileged communities. This commitment is believed to create independent and healthy individuals who are able to advance their communities, while supporting sustainable development. A number of Bakti BCA initiatives in the health sector have included the provision of medical assistance through the Bakti BCA Clinic, "Bakti Sehat for Toddlers", "Stunting Prevention Education for Teenagers", and blood donations. BCA also collaborates with the Ministry of Population and Family Development and other partners in the PASTI (Partnership to Accelerate Stunting Reduction in Indonesia) program to improve the quality of public health through stunting prevention education and the adoption of healthy lifestyles.
