Labuan Bajo, 17 October 2024 – PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA), through its Bakti BCA initiative, expanded #BuktiBakti outreach to Eastern Indonesia by organizing a cataract surgery social service, eye health screenings, distribution of reading glasses, and eye health education for students in West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara. Aligned with the World Sight Day commemoration on October 10, this initiative aimed to increase public awareness about the importance of eye health from an early age. This activity was attended by 50 cataract patients, 500 individuals with presbyopia, and 100 elementary & junior high school students and supported by the Cataract Blindness Management Section of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK PERDAMI).
BCA further contributed to improving eye care services by donating vital surgical equipment, including a Phacoemulsification Machine and two microscopes to the Central SPBK PERDAMI, as well as an additional Phacoemulsification Machine to SPBK PERDAMI Jakarta, with a total value of Rp1.5 billion. On the same occasion, BCA hosted a graduation ceremony for participants of the Pandai Berhitung program, which utilizes the GASING method, an acronym for Gampang, Asyik, dan Menyenangkan (Easy, Fun, and Enjoyable).
BCA Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility EVP Hera F. Haryn stated, “Visual impairment continues to be a significant health issue in Indonesia, with cataracts as the leading cause. Supporting the government’s efforts to reduce the prevalence of cataract-induced blindness, Bakti BCA has been consistently organizing free cataract surgeries across various regions, including East Nusa Tenggara. As part of the World Sight Day 2024 celebration, Bakti BCA is strengthening its educational efforts toward the younger generation, inspiring them to take care of and value their eye health from an early age.”
By the end of 2023, Bakti BCA’s free cataract surgery program had benefited more than 8,100 patients in various regions. In 2024, BCA will continue its support by providing free cataract surgery to more than 470 patients in Namrole & Banda Neira, Maluku; Pasangkayu, West Sulawesi; Central Bengkulu, Bengkulu; and Banjar City, West Java.
Bakti BCA is also making an impact in the education sector by offering math training through the GASING method, as part of its #BuktiBaktiBCA initiative to promote equal access to quality education in Indonesia. Developed by Prof. Yohanes Surya, Ph.D, the GASING method was introduced to 32 teachers and 64 students who had previously struggled with math. The teachers and students came from schools in West Manggarai.
Bakti BCA also partnered with Kole Waste Collection, a local community organization, to provide waste sorting facilities at the event venue. This collaboration aims to raise public awareness about the importance of responsible waste management, particularly in tourist destinations like Labuan Bajo.
BCA consistently conducts sustainable and socially impactful programs for the community through the Bakti BCA program, which covers various areas, including education (Bakti Pendidikan), health (Bakti Kesehatan), culture (Bakti Budaya), community empowerment (Desa Bakti BCA), and the environment (Bakti Lingkungan).
This commitment is further reinforced by the launch of the #BuktiBaktiBCA campaign, aimed at extending positive impact across various regions in Indonesia. BCA has partnered with Nicholas Saputra as the Bakti BCA Ambassador, who will introduce the bank’s various Bakti BCA activities and reinforce its commitment to building Indonesia.
