BCA Offered Free Cataract Surgeries in Tana Toraja to Aid in the Establishment of a Healthy and Productive Society

Tana Toraja, August 9, 2016 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) offered free cataract surgeries in collaboration with Cataract Blindness Prevention Section of the Indonesian Optometrist Association (SPBK-Perdami). The cataract surgeries—which took place at RSU Lakipadada, Tana Toraja, South Sulawesi—were part of BCA's effort in decreasing the number of blindness due to cataract.

Head of CSR BCA Sapto Rachmadi, Head of BCA Pare-Pare Main Branch Anggraeni Tedjokusumo, Tana Toraja Deputy Regent Victor Datuan Batara, RSU Lakipadada Director Rudhy Andilolo, and Head of SPBK Perdami Team M. Sidik attended the event, held on August 8-10, 2016, and targeted to treat about 200 patients.

“Cataract surgery is a continuous effort from BCA to reach people in various regions. We understand that cataract can affect anyone, not only our elders, and generally can be treated through surgery. Hopefully, the surgery can restore the health of patients and help them become productive contributors in building the region's potentials," Sapto explained.

BCA worked together with SPBK-Perdami since 2001. In 2015, BCA facilitated 689 free cataract surgeries in Ciledug, Tangerang, Banten; Pelabuhan Ratu, Sukabumi, West Java; Balangan, South Kalimantan; Lela, Maumare, Flores; Sukadana, Lampung; Liwa, Lampung; and Mamuju, West Sulawasi. In addition to providing free cataract surgery, BCA also donated 13 units of cataract surgery equipment and 2 units of biometric equipment to SPBK-Perdami in 2015.

Based on data from the Ministry of Health, cataract, or the clouding of eyes’ natural lenses, is still the number one cause of 50 per cent of blindness in the country. To mitigate this, government reached out to various entities to decrease the number of cataract sufferers in Indonesia. BCA’s effort is in line with the government’s vision to a cataract-free Indonesia by 2020.

“BCA success is inseparable from public support. This pushed us to work together to enhance the well being of the people around us, especially those in beautiful Tana Toraja, a place that is familiar to domestic and international tourists. Let’s build a healthy society free of cataract together,” Sapto concluded.

The surgeries will be held for 3 days, from August 8-10, 2016. The cataract surgeries are expected to treat about 200 patients.
