Jakarta, March 5th 2016 - PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. (BCA) continues to pursue its commitment to shape the characters of Indonesia’s young generation through arts and culture, this time by inviting BCA foster high school students to a theater arts viewing. BCA invited students from three Bakti BCA high schools SMAN 3 Serang, SMAN 1 Gadingrejo, and SMAN 1 Karangmolo, as well as teaching staff to TeaterKoma’s 143rd show SemarGugat.
The show is expected to run from 3-10 March 2016 at GedungKesenian Jakarta. BCA Corporate Secretary IngeSetiawati as well as actress, theater activist, and one of TeaterKoma’s founders RatnaRiatiarno attended the event.
”Bakti BCA, through its Smart Solution pillar, does not only provide support in school facilities and high achieving students in formal education, but also concerned with the development of their characters. Our efforts, one of which is through the introduction of theater arts, hope to encourage students to create and contribute added value back to society. There are numerous learning opportunities that students can glean from theater, from the moral of the story to art aesthetics that stimulates students imagination and creativity,” Inge explained.
SemarGugat’s last performance was in 1995, and tells a story imbued with social criticisms of our contemporary society. The plot centers on Amarta Kingdom that was unsettled by Srikandi’s unusual request for dowry to her future husband, Arjuna. At the wedding reception, Arjuna will be asked to cut the crest of Semar to be given to Srikandi as a wedding gift. The request presents a great insult to Semar and his family. It is later revealed that the request is made by BetariPermoni, who has possessed Srikandi. Semar then travels to Khayangan and asks to be returned to his handsome former appearance, where he then becomes the king of SimpangBuwanaNuranitisAsri, bearing the title PrabuSanggadonyaLukanurani. After his rise to royalty, Semar challenges both Arjuna and Srikandi to a battle. ”Even though the opening of SemarGugat is a story of romance, the moral of the overall story places a special emphasis on honesty and critical character. The plotline is packaged creatively to entertain and educate students. We hope the moral message can be absorbed and applied to play a large role in the development of our upcoming generation,” Inge continued.
Prior to the showing, the students received a briefing on theater arts through a ”Sharing Session”. Actress, theater activist, and one of TeaterKoma’s founders RatnaRiatiarno shared her experience developing theater arts, including the 20-year journey of SemarGugat.
In addition to inviting Bakti BCA high school students to theater, BCA has been actively supporting TeaterKoma, who plays an important role in the preservation of theater arts in Indonesia. BCA’s support for TeaterKoma plays included Opera UlarPutih, RepublikCangik, Demonstran, Sie Jin Kwie, SampekEngtay, danIbu. ”BCA’s long support for TeaterKoma is our commitment to preserve and support the development of national culture, arts, as well as to the character development of the Indonesian people,” Inge concluded.
