Preventing Blindness Due to Cataract, BCA and Perdami Holds Free Cataract Surgery

Indramayu, November 15, 2021 – Cataract is one of the leading causes of blindness that may affect anyone. PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) as part of the community has consistently held social services for cataract surgery in the country. Collaborating with the Perdami’s (the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association) Cataract Blindness Eradication Unit (SPBK) this time, BCA holds Free Cataract Surgeries at MM Hospital Indramayu Regency.

This cataract surgery as a social service activity was attended by the Head of Indramayu KCU (Main Branch Office), Budiman. Attending the event are the Regent of Indramayu Hj. Nina Agustina, Head of the Indramayu Health Office dr. Deden Boni Koswara, Director of MM Indramayu Hospital, dr. Suwardi Astradipura, MARS, Indramayu Police Chief M. Lukman Syarif, S.I.K., M.H, Dandim (Military District) 06.16 Indramayu Lieutenant Colonel. Inf (Infantry) Teguh Wibowo, S.Sos, Head of Indramayu Subdistrict Indra Mulyana, A.P, M.Si, and all doctors and Perdami committees. Cataract surgeries at the MM Hospital in Indramayu Regency are held for three consecutive days, from November 15 to 17, 2021.

Based on data revealed by the Rapid Assessment of Avoidable Blindness (RAAB), from 2014 to 2016 by Perdami and National Institute of Health Research and Development of the Ministry of Health showed that the blindness rate in Indonesia reached 3% and the 81% are caused by cataract. Observing these numbers, of course, it has become the responsibility of many parties to collaborate to prevent blindness caused by cataract.

““Cataract is not a disease that can be taken so lightly, it needs prevention and serious handling so that the number of people suffered blindness in Indonesia does not increase. BCA is committed to help brothers and sisters who suffer from cataracts but facing difficulty to pay for surgery. This social service is a form of BCA's concern for all patients with cataract, especially those in Indramayu. This year, on October 2021, we conduct Free Cataract Surgery Program at Dadi Family Hospital Ciamis with a total of 206 patients, MM Hospital Indramayu Regency with a total of 217 patients and today we are targeting 150 patients to undergo cataract surgery through this social service, "said Inge Setiawati as EVP CSR of BCA.

For additional information, BCA has cooperated with Perdami since 2001 and has successfully performed cataract surgery on 5,969 patients. BCA also provides cataract surgery equipment for SPBK PERDAMI, and several Perdami Branches to accelerate the eradication of cataract blindness. The operation involves nine ophthalmologists accompanied by medical assistants to treat approximately 150 patients. On the other hand, in 2019, BCA donated 1 microscope and cataract instrument to Central Management SPBK Perdami, 1 microscope to Perdami DKI Jakarta Branch, and 1 phacoemulsification machine purchase to representative of Perdami Riau Branch.

Budiman expressed that this cataract surgery is a noble activity and gives hope to many Indramayu residents who are hindered by the cost of surgery. He also hopes that this activity could be held in many other regions in the country.
