Beware of Deepfake AI Scams

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become an essential part of our daily lives.

However, it is increasingly being exploited by irresponsible individuals to commit crimes. One recent case that went viral involved a scam using deepfake AI.

Scammers manipulated videos of Indonesian local government officials to make it seem as if they were promoting attractive programs. As a result, hundreds of people fell victim, transferring substantial sums of money to the fraudsters’ bank accounts.

This method may continue to evolve, potentially deceiving us by mimicking the voices and appearances of family members, close friends, or even BCA officials.

Security Tips

Avoid deepfake AI scams with these 3 security tips:

1. Listen for Signs of Fraud Using AI Voices

Although a person's voice can be imitated, there will usually be unusual pauses or distortions in the voice and video, which could be signs of deepfake.

So, listen carefully to the caller's voice, especially the rhythm and speed of speech, which are often more difficult to imitate. If you suspect something, turn off the video immediately.

2. Watch Out for Signs of Fraud Using Visual AI

Detect the signs of fraudsters using visual AI:

  • Discrepancies between facial movements and voice
  • Unnatural eyes and gaze
  • Blurred edges and background
  • Differences in quality in certain areas
  • Too perfect or exaggerated

3. Refuse to Follow Requests

The content of the video usually consists of tempting offers or urgent and pressing information.

If the person then asks for money or personal data, the safest thing to do is to ignore them.

If the video content is related to BCA, make sure the number and official BCA accounts are correct as follows:

  • Call Halo BCA at 1500888 (no prefix required)
  • WhatsApp Bank BCA at 08111500998 (with a blue tick)
  • Official BCA social media accounts can be checked at www.bca.co.id/socialmedia
  • The haloBCA app can be downloaded from the Play Store or App Store.
