Jakarta, 21 March 2024 - As Eid al-Fitr 2024 nears, people are starting their preparation to return to their hometown or going for a vacation. In accordance with the situation, BCA Insurance Head of Region I Indra Gunawan encourages the public to protect their homes that will be left for a while.
According to Indra, one of the threats that need to be considered by travelers is fire as the cases are common happening in households in Indonesia, especially in big cities. Based on data from DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), throughout 2023 there were 2,286 fire cases in DKI Jakarta.
"When visiting their hometown (mudik), all family members must have left the house empty and that is where asset protection is needed. Hence why it should be protected, especially when the house sits empty, to ensure our assets are kept safe. We wouldn't want to be homeless when coming back home.," said Indra at BCA Expoversary 2024.
Indra explained that one of the silent killers that triggers fire is electrical short circuits. Based on the data from DKI Jakarta Gulkarmat Department, the majority of fires that occurred in the capital city throughout 2023 were caused by electrical short circuits.
"Why do we call it ‘silent killer’? Because we never know when it could happen due to the heat of the cable or the electrical panel. We would also never know which cable that heated, in the underground or above the ceiling. It is not easy to find out," he explained.
In addition to fires, other risks that could threaten an empty house during vacation are riots, floods, and many more. For this reason, Indra recommends travelers to insure their homes.
One of the products that can be beneficial for travelers is home insurance. According to Indra, insurance products are relatively affordable for travelers who want their homes to be protected during vacation.
"Home insurance is the cheapest insurance of all existing property insurance. If I may illustrate it, assuming the building value is IDR 500 million per year, the cost is around IDR 150,000 for 1 year. Exclusively for Expoversary 2024, customers have the opportunity to get a discount and several features can be added," he said.
In addition to protecting home assets, vehicle protection also could be a consideration for the public. Indra added that vehicle insurance can guarantee assets from loss or damage due to collision, theft, fire, and others.
