BCA and the Ministry of Trade Develop Special Curriculum to Support MSMEs ‘Go Export’

Jakarta, 12 August 2023 - In an effort to promote the growth of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) via export activities, PT Bank Central Asia, Tbk (BCA), has partnered with the Ministry of Trade through the Export and Trade Services Human Resources Training Center (PPEJP) to organize in-class training sessions for the MSME partners nurtured by BCA who are prepared for exporting.

Sugih Rahmansyah, the Head of PPEJP at the Ministry of Trade, and Tjoeng Haryanto, Senior Vice President of BCA’s Business Commercial & SME Division, signed the "Training of BCA's MSME Partners to Go Export 2023 Cooperation Agreement" in Jakarta on Thursday (10/8).

For the pilot project, BCA and PPEJP have set a target of 60 MSME entrepreneurs to participate in the in-class training activities, scheduled to take place in Yogyakarta and Central Java. To enhance the capabilities and capacities of MSMEs, BCA and PPEJP have designed a special curriculum that includes educational materials aimed at improving product quality, expanding export access, and simulating foreign transactions. This curriculum is expected to not only facilitate their entry into the global market but also assist them in exporting value-added goods at higher selling prices.

In addition to providing training for MSMEs prepared to export their products, the partnership between BCA and the Ministry of Trade also involves collaboration with the Indonesian Trade Promotion Center (ITPC), Trade Attachés (Atdag), and the Directorate General of National Export Development (DJPEN) This collaboration aims to facilitate MSMEs' access to international markets.

MSMEs are the backbone of Indonesia’s economy. According to data from the Ministry of Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises  released in 2018, there were 64.2 million MSME actors, accounting for 99.99% of the total business actors in Indonesia. MSMEs absorb a workforce of 117 million individuals, accounting for 97% of the overall workforce participation in the business sector worldwide. Moreover, The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs also recorded that the export contribution of MSMEs increased from 14.37% in 2020 to 15.69% in 2021.

Tjoeng Haryanto, Senior Vice President of BCA's Business Commercial & SME Division, explained, " "We acknowledge the significant potential of MSMEs in driving the national economy, evident in the heightened export contribution of 2021. As a part of the national financial ecosystem, BCA is committed to supporting the government's efforts in promoting MSMEs to Go Export through various innovations. In terms of financial access, BCA has disbursed the Kredit Usaha Rakyat (KUR), or loans for people’s business, to MSMEs across various sectors. This in-class training is expected to complement the financial access facilities that we have provided."

In addition to the in-class training,BCA has consistently fostered MSME growth through special financing programs and has developed MSME programs with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) perspectives. Furthermore, in 2023, BCA also organized the UMKM Fest as a platform to connect MSMEs with business players, and to assist them in marketing products both online and offline. The event involved over 1,400 MSMEs from across Indonesia.

“We are aware that, despite the potential of MSMEs, many of them still encounter difficulties in accessing international markets and conducting foreign transactions. Hence, this training has been specially designed to address all of their challenges, providing not only theoretical knowledge but also transaction simulations to enhance their capacity and capabilities. We hope this activity can have a positive impact on the advancement of their businesses,"  concluded Tjoeng Haryanto.
