Supporting Mask Movement (GPM), BCA Donates 100,000 Face Masks to Three Provinces in Indonesia

Surabaya, 19 August 2020 – The Covid-19 pandemic COVID-19 has significantly changed people’s lifestyle and habits, including mask-mandatory in public spaces. As an institution that stands by the people, PT Bank Central Asia Tbk. (BCA) supports World Health Organization (WHO) and the Indonesian government’s efforts to break the Covid-19 chain of transmission in Indonesia. BCA manifested its support through the Bakti BCA’s CSR program by supporting the Mask Movement (GPM), which donated 100,000 masks to the people of West Java, Central Java and East Java.

In East Java, BCA donated 50,000 face masks for the people of Surabaya and Sidoarjo. An additional aid of 10,000 surgical masks for medical personnel was donated to the city of Surabaya. Meanwhile in Sidoarjo, BCA also donated 500 pieces of PPE coveralls and 5,000 surgical masks for medical personnel.

Head of BCA Regional Office III Frengky Chandra Kusuma symbolically handed over the aid to the Mayor of Surabaya Tri Rismaharini on a separate occasion in Surabaya and the Head of Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sidoarjo Regency Dwidjo Prawito in Sidoarjo, Wednesday 19 August 2020. The event was also attended by representatives of the Mask Movement (GPM) and the Indonesian Market Operators Association in both cities.

“As we all know wearing face masks is the first step that everyone can take in order to break the chain of transmission of the Covid-19 pandemic. By wearing a mask, we protect our respiratory system from virus transmission that spreads through droplets, micro-droplets and aerosols. Unfortunately, some people are not aware of the importance of wearing masks during Covid-19. Therefore, we support this movement in order to provide in-depth education to the public about the importance of wearing face mask appropriately during the Covid-19 pandemic today. Besides for education, we also distribute masks to supplement the needs for face masks in said three provinces,” explained Head of BCA Regional Office III Frengky Chandra Kusuma representing BCA.

For BCA’s support, according to the Chairman of GPM, Sigit Pramono, as the initiator of the Mask Movement, “The partnership with BCA serves as a mutual cooperation and collaborative effort. There are approximately 9,200 traditional market operators in Indonesia, including more than 7 million market traders and dozens of millions of buyers or consumers. For that we open cooperation with various parties due to the large numbers of markets that need counsel.”

“GPM has collaborated with Asparindo and we will continuously and regularly provide these market traders with counseling,” added Sigit Pramono.

WHO has recommended mask wearing for all people around the globe in efforts to prevent transmission of Covid-19. WHO also issued guidelines on wearing face masks correctly and appropriately, including washing hands before wearing a face mask, putting on masks appropriately around face, taking mask off correctly, and wearing a dry and clean mask. Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Indonesian Market Operators Association (Asparindo) Yohanes Joko Setyanto said that the mask aid provided by BCA and counseling program by GPM will greatly support our collective efforts to prevent virus transmission in traditional markets and keep the economic activity in the market alive.

In addition to providing assistance in the form of masks, BCA’s support in the GPM program is also manifested through educating the public on the importance of wearing and washing masks to ensure cleanliness. The activity was carried out through several channels, including talk shows in cities where masks were distributed, giving out educational brochures on mask wearing and advice on washing masks, as well as publishing educational videos at BCA Head Office and branch offices throughout the nation.

“Currently, the number of people who contracted Covid-19 in the world, including Indonesia, tends to continue to increase, even though the number of people who recover is also increasing. Through this movement, we want to invite the public to continue to comply with established health protocols to break the chain of the Covid-19 transmission, including by wearing a mask every day when leaving home. In the end, we also hope that this movement can contribute in slowing down the number of Covid-19 cases and the readiness to welcome the new normal,” Frengky concluded.
