BCA’s Cataract Surgery Social Program Restores Hope and Helps Communities Lead More Productive Lives

Bima, December 5, 2025 - For many people, undergoing cataract surgery is more than regaining clearer vision. It represents the hope of rebuilding a better life, including enhancing economic productivity. This renewed sense of hope was felt by hundreds of Bima residents and surrounding areas in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) who benefited from the Cataract Surgery Social Program held by PT Bank Central Asia Tbk (BCA) in collaboration with the Cataract Blindness Prevention Section of the Indonesian Ophthalmologist Association (SPBK Perdami) at Sultan Abdul Kahir II Hospital Bima on Friday (5/12).

The Cataract Surgery Social Program in Bima marked the fifth and final edition of the series held throughout 2025. The four previous editions took place at RSUD Maba in East Halmahera, North Maluku; Klinik Mata Vision Center in Kapuas, East Kalimantan; RSUD Lebong in Bengkulu; and Hermina Hospital in Tasikmalaya, West Java. In total, 132 beneficiaries across five provinces received cataract surgeries held by BCA and SPBK Perdami in 2025. Since 2001, more than 9.900 patients have undergone cataract surgery under Bakti BCA program and SPBK Perdami.

EVP Corporate Communication & Social Responsibility BCA Hera F. Haryn emphasized, “BCA believes that clear vision is a basic human right for every citizen. This is why the Cataract Surgery Social Program is carried out to help fulfill such right. Through free cataract surgery, we hope that every beneficiary can return to their daily activities with greater comfort and productivity. For adults, healthy eyesight enables them to improve their productivity and economic conditions for their families. Meanwhile, the surgery helps children to learn more effectively and achieve strong academic performance.”

The free cataract surgery supported by BCA has provided concrete improvements to people’s ability to carry out their daily activities. Many beneficiaries in Bima and the surrounding areas work in the informal sector as farmers, traders, or fishermen. High exposure to sunlight increases their risk of visual impairments, including cataracts. The surgery is expected to restore greater mobility and support the economic resilience of their families.

Head of Sultan Abdul Kahir II Hospital Bima, Major CKM dr. Arnov Lahira Eriskan, Sp.M, expressed his appreciation for BCA’s commitment to reducing the prevalence of blindness caused by cataract in Bima and the surrounding areas. “We extend our gratitude to BCA for organizing this Cataract Surgery Social Program, which reaches communities across the country. Along with SPBK Perdami, BCA not only increases access to medical treatment for residents of Bima and NTB, but also reinforces the spirit of beneficiaries to live productively and create positive impacts for their families and communities.”

BCA’s consistency in supporting eye health under the Bakti BCA is also reflected through Vision Screening and Early Eye Disorder Detection Program for Students themed “Bright Eyes, Bright Future” (Mata Cemerlang, Prestasi Gemilang) held across the Greater Bandung region in West Java, benefiting a total of 2.100 students.

Under Bakti BCA, the company continues to deliver positive impact through various health-related social initiatives. These include free health screenings (covering hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure, and uric acid checks) and the Bakti BCA Blood Donation Program, which has contributed more than 15.900 bags of blood to communities across Indonesia.
