We are inspired to introduce wayang to the younger generation, through programs such as Wayang for Student today,” said Iwan Senjaya.
“Wayang for Student” is a Bakti BCA effort under the umbrella program “BCA for Indonesian Wayang”. The event was aimed to educate and introduce wayang, one aspect of Indonesia culture acknowledged by UNESCO, to the younger generation. “All the activities for wayang promotion we have today is designed to be interesting. The event was not solely aimed to introduce wayang to the younger generation through wayang show, but BCA also holds a workshop for them. We hope that the show and workshop may help instill an interest in the art of wayang culture,” continued Inge Setiawati.
Previously, 1,940 students from two schools in Bandung had also participated in similar activities bearing the theme “Cepot Goes to School”. There were invited to get to know wayang better through a 1-hour Wayang Golek show and 3 workshops, including gamelan/karawitan, dance and angklung. BCA had also held similar activity for Junior High School and High School students in Ubud, Bali on 15-17 April 2014.
“We see that the younger generation is less interested in getting involved in the wayang culture and today, wayang performances are less frequent and it becomes less popular in the eye of the Indonesian youth as a result. BCA strives to present activities that would bring the Indonesian people closer to wayang, especially Indonesian younger generation. The presence of Wayang for Student is expected to inspire the Indonesian younger generation to know, love and moved to preserve the Indonesian national heritage that has been internationally recognized,” Iwan Senjaya concluded.
