Not only watching the show, several students from SMA Negeri 1, SMA Negeri 10, SMA Yayasan Atika Sunda, and SMP Negeri 25 were also performing a wayang repertoire titled Sayembara Mantili, Rahwana Gandrum, Hanoman duta, and Kumba Karna Gugur. Other activities were also held such as dalang workshops, making wayang, and exhibition.
In the opening ceremony, Lanny said that Wayang for Student is one of BCA’s efforts in maintaining the existence of wayang as Indonesian culture, amid the rampant digital-based entertainment for the millennial generation. "We realize that students are the successor generation to preserve wayang as Indonesian cultural wealth. This has then driven us to organize activities involving wayang for the younger generation, like Wayang for Student today,” tambah Lanny.
According to the records of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, wayang has become one of the eight cultural elements listed in the UNESCO Intangibel Cultural Heritage List since 2008. “Traditional art, such as wayang, has paths for promoting the development of popular culture in Indonesia. Therefore, through the Bakti BCA cultural program, under the auspices of “BCA for Indonesian Wayang”, we continuously encourage Indonesian students to learn more about Indonesian culture, including wayang,” explained Lanny.
Wayang for Student in Bandung offers two type of workshops, namely the Making and Assembling Wayang Workshop and Dalang Workshop. Besides, on the occasion, students also participated in a special performance, namely 1st Fragment Mantili Contest by students of SMA Negeri 1 and 2nd Fragment Kumbakarna Gugur by students of SMP Negeri 25.
Lanny added that Wayang for Student was held as a vessel of education and to further introduce wayang to the successor generation as a form of Indonesian culture recognized by UNESCO. “As our cultural asset, wayang stories carry within them moral values and role models. Unfortunately, the younger generation have a limited access to read or watch these wayang stories. Therefore, through the Wayang for Student activities, we hope that wayang’s popularity as a form of entertainment will continue to grow, as many other forms of entertainment well liked by the youth today,” Lanny concluded.
