Beware of Social Engineering Fraud for Limit Upgrade/Add-on Credit Card Offers

Social engineering fraud has once again taken a toll on BCA credit cardholders, where attackers usually contact BCA customers over the phone or applications such as WhatsApp, Line, Facebook, etc. pretending to be the Bank BCA/BCA Telemarketing/other banks/financial institutions.

The attackers will contact a potential victim – a BCA credit cardholder, pretending to be the Bank BCA/other banks. They made the cardholder believes that they are, indeed, from BCA. Moreover, they use a number similar to Halo BCA, or pretending to be a BCA official Telemarketer.

The most common attack occurs when scammers offer to upgrade BCA credit card limit or offer a supplementary card. Fraudsters will entice the victims with prizes and easy terms. They also make other offers to deceit their victims, such as exemption from annual fee, reward claims, and online shopping discount vouchers.

Sometimes, fraudsters create a ploy to cause panic by informing cardholders that there have been suspicious transactions made on their cards and they are calling to help void/block said transactions (they also pretend to be from other banks).

Furthermore, they will ask cardholders to fill out a form (sent via email/SMS/WA or verbally) containing of confidential banking information, such as credit card numbers, expiry date, CVV/CVC, OTPs, and so on. Affected credit cardholders will give the OTPs to fraudster either via a fake link provided by the fraudster, or verbally.

If the cardholder gives away this information, the fraudster has succeeded in accessing the victim’s credit card to be used for illegal online transactions.
